Performance-based Optimisation Of Energy Dissipation Systems

Improving the dynamic response of structures by using energy absorption devices has received considerable attention in recent years. The objective of these systems is to absorb a significant amount of the input energy, thus reducing energy dissipation demand on primary structural members and minimizing possible structural damage. Energy dissipation systems can be applied both in the design of new buildings and retrofitting of existing structures. However, due to the complexity of the optimisation problem, currently there is no practical method for optimum design of these systems in engineering practice.
This proposed project will lead to the development of practical procedures for the optimum design of
added dissipation systems in framed structures. The proposed design method will be based on a novel
optimisation technique that has been introduced by Dr Iman Hajirasouliha and successfully used for seismic design and strengthening of different structural systems. The work will involve analysis, design and computer modelling.
