Students had to attend lectures or laboratory sessions from 9.15-4.45 almost every day. While Thursday afternoons were left clear, there were also classes every Saturday morning and, in their third term, third year civil engineers spent four hours every Saturday afternoon on surveying field work.
Today, students have lectures, lab sessions and meetings with their tutors from 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, except for Wednesday afternoons when sports activities take place. They don’t have any Saturday classes and field work is taken in the form of class trips during the week. Students have more time to study independently for their dissertations, project work and reading time.
