Our first female academic, Valerie Seddon was appointed in October 1969 as a temporary lecturer in Civil and Structural Engineering.

We currently have eight female academic members of staff in the department including:our first female Reader; the Faculty Director of Learning & Teaching; and the first person to be presented with the RILEM Gustavo Colonetti Medal which recognises her as one of the best researchers under the age of 35 worldwide in construction materials.

Only 6% of the workforce in engineering roles in the UK is female, however, this percentage jumps to 17.7% within the academic staff in our department. 2017 also sees our first female Professor; Rachel Horn who has been recognised for her local, national and international leadership in engineering education.
