Our Centenary Year

Civil & Structural Engineering

OUR HERITAGE

We're excited to celebrate 100 years of Civil & Structural Engineering at the University of Sheffield. Our history is a rich and varied one. We were created in one world war, survived a second and have seen thousands of students come through our doors in the last century. Driven by teaching and research excellence, we inspire and empower our students to engineer a better future for us all.

We have grown from a small department to a large community of 44 academic staff, 35 research staff, 19 professional services staff and 17 technical staff; hundreds of undergraduate, postgraduate and research students; and thousands of alumni worldwide. Discover more about our Department's history and research, our graduates and the difference they are making globally, as well as our future and what it holds.

ONE DEPARTMENT, ONE VISION

Driven by teaching and research excellence, we inspire and empower our students to engineer a better future.

ENGINEERING A BETTER FUTURE

Since 1917, our Department has been contributing to changing the world. Our vision to inspire and empower world class scholarship, nurture creativity to achieve excellence in research and education, and engineer a sustainable future for people and the planet is at the core of our activities.

We've unearthed lots of treasures while researching our history for our centenary, including lots of student photos. Some are dated and unfortunately some aren't. But have a browse and see if you can spot yourself or your old classmates!'

Mad sprint to Mappin.

I can recall one occasion where I turned up for an exam at the Goodwin sports centre only to find the exam was actually taking place at Mappin Street. After the 1 mile sprint down the hill, I arrived at the exam out of breath and pouring in sweat - the examiner took great pity and allowed me an extra 15 minutes to recover !!
